The first edition of Le Petit Néant did not have a theme – we did not want to restrict people’s imagination.

The second edition does not have a central theme either, but we would like to suggest possible avenues for exploration. This does not mean you cannot engage in pathways of your own choosing – our suggestions are only there as a guide. Our final selection of images will be governed by the way they work together – the dialogue they have with each other.

We would like to explore together pure, distilled, visual narrative – that is, storytelling with imagery, without the use of a running written commentary. This is the only real condition of the brief. The idea is to create a narrative journey that is in a constant state of flux, joining together the viewpoints of different observers. You can submit single images or a series of images that exist in symbiosis. The stories do not have to be too structured, and they certainly do not have to have a beginning and end, but they should be open and stimulating to the imagination – both for the storyteller and the ‘reader’.

Our suggestions for themes are as follows: life, mineral and natural; the dimensions hidden in everyday reality; silence; the journey; the microscopic and the infinite.

All of the above suggestions can be interpreted as freely as you think appropriate.

The deadline for receiving images is Sunday the 21st of July 2013.
The final selection of images will take place over the summer months, with a view to publishing the magazine sometime in October 2013.
All images should be black and white and be in either of the following dimensions:

190 mm x 260 mm (portrait)
380 mm x 260 mm (landscape (a double-page spread))

Images, or series of images, should be no longer than six pages.
Please send compressed files to: petitneant@gmail.com

Please feel free to ask further questions through the same email address.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mandate file leggeri in bianco e nero.
Queste le dimensioni:
190 x 260 (formato ritratto)
380 x 260 (formato paesaggio)

Internazionale, 19-25 ottobre 2012

A Kaleidoscope on Paper
A new publication is born. Unpredictable, unlike any other you've seen, not even the comics or illustration ones published in Europe. The editor and funder is Miguel Angel Valdivia, a young and talented artist. He's Italian but living in London. Even if Le Petit Néant is not a comic publication, some illustrations use their typical sequentiality, especially because illustration and comics authors are mixed. The continuous flow of drawings, single and full page, in sequence, turn this “little nothingness” into an abyss, a magma, of remarkable density. The 28 artists, from around the world (Europe is the most represented area) stand out for their ability, not only to express a strong idea in a single image (typical of illustration) but also to amplify this idea through the strong weaving of the stroke and the graphics (typical of comics). Unlike most contemporary illustration, satisfied by small concepts. Here we have visions. Those of the British Charlie Duck and Thomas Dowse, the Mexican Bayrol Jiménez or Gianluigi Toccafondo. Or the Belgian comic author Frédéric Coché and Giacomo Monti, Giacomo Nanni, Francesco Cattani and Brecht Vandenbroucke. You can also order this kaleidoscope through lepetitneant.com.

Lonely but straight these two wanted artists (though more wanted by the police than by art collectors) follow their mission to spread abnormal, irritating even scary signs. With their desperate try to awake the overdosed mind of the Italian people – feeded with powdered milk and a dull TV programme, the works of cyop&#38;kaf reach the remotest middle-class districts or really poor outlying districts, but also art galleries and most reactionary minds. They reveal themselves as a drop in the movement of our prevailing standardized uniform thoughts. In their point of view the listing of single or collective exhibitions of some artists -especially in recent times- is only a means to improve their income. Cyop&#38;kaf however regard that it is quite poor to put everything on a reduced list documenting past times. That’s why they invite their audience to an open-air exhibition which is indeed open on 365 days a year admission free for everyone – this exhibition is permanently under construction between the city centre of Naples and the immense periphery just in order to say: ”Open your heart – but especially your eyes!”

Born in Tapachula Chiapas Mexico in 1982.
Sailing between humor, irony, and the creases of tributes, Alejandro García seems to be part of this idol worship generation of North American culture and the incoherences of our times.

Passionate believer of decaying, depressive icons: rockstars, all those that plunged into drugs and killed themselves over love or something that looked very much like it, science fiction characters, who hid humansides full of mystery, porn stars, that if they used to be perceived like mere sexual objects, now get to become beings of cult and admiration…

We create terrifying, extreme icons, trying to arouse in all of us a feeling of being alive. We are faithful followers of every being of darkness, because they help us, through their own forms of expression, to say to the world how our generation feels…

Alejandro manages to get us disconcerted, he makes us question ourselves if his work is a constant criticism, or a show of respect, At the same time, he makes us see how everything is the same thing, how we all are equal, how death promises much more than life…

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

-
For several years, Gabriel Leger’s work has developed around the practice of drawing, its difficulties and its possibilities, through the use of various media (charcoal, carbon paper, graphite, on paper, fabric, prints, maps).

Until 2009, under the guise of exploring various aspects of Russian society (tales, icons, banditry), he explored his own personal connection to the country. His current work, via the re-appropriation of various documents dating from the post-war period, serves as a counterpoint to the idea of self-realization in a protean society.

Born in 1978, Gabriel Leger is a graduate of the Ecole nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He has participated in exhibitions in France (Paris, Marseilles), Belgium (Brussels), Russia (Winzavod, Moscow), and United Kingdom (Cardiff). He has been awarded grants for residencies in Brazil (FAAP, São Paulo) and in France (Jerome Hill Foundation, Cassis).

Sam 3 is an artist that paints big (and we mean big) as well as small shadows and silhouettes in his urban surroundings. Sometimes ironic, other times poetic, always thought provoking, his work is more than a pretty picture.

Born in Elche, Spain, SAM3 currently lives and works in Madrid, Spain. His large street murals are certainly hard to miss to say the least and can be found across much of Europe.

		<description>THE DARK VOID ILLUMINATED

A hierarchy exists in the art world; names of artists are placed on a list that is steered by galleries, museums, curators and collectors. The art market is a global one, leading galleries have branches and affiliations throughout the world where their celebrity artists show regularly, positioning themselves on the ladder of success. Much of their work is self-referential and self-reverential. Art is about art.

Parallel to this world lives the silent army of graphic artists who weave their pictorial narratives from their imagination. The content is rich in observation, psychology and the study of the human condition. Drawing is their common medium; it provides the fastest route to the mind, allowing artists to directly tap into the imagination inhabited by visions and dreams. These are often witty, absurd and surreal. They focus intensely on a scene or a drama. The artworks are both visual and literary.

But where can we see the work of these draughtsmen and women? Unlike the gallery scene, their outlets are less defined. Some of them make their presence known in graphic novels, others through printmaking. A few may be lucky to find a gallery. Le Petit Néant offers us an insight into this rich world. Its editor, Miguel Angel Valdivia and designer, Giulia Garbin, have managed to group together the unusual visions of international artists that the reader may not know, but once seen, their images will not fail to intrigue.
